Perfect Attendance for Girls: The Reusable Pad Project

In many rural communities, a natural menstrual cycle can become a significant barrier to a young woman’s education.Without access to affordable sanitary products, many school-aged girls are forced to stay home for several days each month. This recurring disruption not only causes them to fall behind in their studies but also diminishes their confidence and increases the likelihood of them dropping out of school entirely.

To combat this form of period poverty, the Perfect Attendance for Girls project was created to ensure that nothing stands in the way of a young woman’s education.

A Cross-Continental Volunteer Effort

The heart of this initiative begins in the United States, where a dedicated group of about eight volunteers meets weekly. These women generously donate their time and skills to carefully cut and sew soft, durable flannel fabric into high-quality, reusable sanitary pads. Their weekly gatherings are a labor of love, directly connecting their hands to the educational success of girls across the globe.

The Hygiene Kits & Distribution

To ensure the girls are fully supported, the project distributes complete, ready-to-use hygiene kits directly to the schools.

• The Kit: Each recipient receives a comprehensive package designed for privacy and hygiene. It includes three pairs of brand-new underwear, six washable flannel pads, and a specially designed, discreet pouch to safely store soiled pads while the girls are attending classes.
• The Rollout: Initially, the project provided these complete kits to all girls in classes 6, 7, and 8, ensuring the immediate upper-grade population was covered.
• Ongoing Support: To keep the program sustainable, the project now focuses on equipping every incoming class 6 girl with a complete kit, ensuring they have the supplies they need as they enter this critical stage of their development.

By providing these thoughtfully crafted kits, the project removes a primary obstacle to female education. Girls are no longer forced to choose between their dignity and their learning.
